  • The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair. It is composed of a thin envelope made of scales (bricks) and lipids (cement) that protect the hair. Sebum, produced by the sebaceous glands, forms a film on the surface of the cuticle. It is continually renewed, thus contributing to hair’s suppleness and shine. A damaged cuticle can lead to increased brittleness and breakage.
